Artist residency in the cradle of humankind

In June-July 2023, I was honoured to be a resident artist in the NIROX eco-system of innovation that is evolving in the UNCESCO World Heritage area in South Africa, known as “the Cradle of Humankind.” In collaboration with Villa-Legodi Centre for Sculpture, I designed and led the First Vessels Collective, a project that engaged nearly a hundred youth and adults in hand-forming small pots reminiscent of early humans’ vessel-making. We gathered groups into outdoor community circles over several weeks and used foraged tools—acacia needles, African porcupine quills, stones and foliage—for surface decoration of the clay. The project culminated in an exhibition at which participants could view all the fired vessels and take home their own creation.

Forest bathing & contemplative clay-making

In May 2023, I collaborated with Rev. Ann Evans, Shinto priest and certified Forest Therapy Guide on offering a spring event for visitors to Shin Mei Spiritual Centre on Knapp Island. After a morning of contemplative shinrin-yoku in the coastal forest, we gathered in a circle of tree log seating to form stoneware clay cups, using our hands along with nature’s textures and tools foraged on the island. Everyone’s kiln-fired pieces turned out beautifully! An encore day was scheduled for summertime in August and fully booked with keen participants.

Return to el torn in barcelona

January 2023

I fulfilled my soul’s longing for a return visit to El Torn, the pottery school in Barcelona where I had spent a monthslong learning residency in 2011-12. The facility has moved into larger storefront premises in Barcelona’s vibey, artsy and modern Poble Nou district. The new space enables an expanded offering of beginner to advanced wheel-throwing and hand-building classes provided by a team of 7 staff, with 4 kilns, and 40 different studio glazes. El Torn also features 60 compact “co-working” studio spaces for short and longer-term rental by potters from anywhere in the world who are seeking to learn, enjoy and experience ceramics in community. I am just one of the early names on a growing list of potter alumni from more than 20 countries who have been resident here.

I was graciously hosted and welcomed to El Torn by Paula Loew (pictured here at the school entrance) who now leads the thriving enterprise as Founder-Owner and Managing Director. Much-loved Martin Loew, my beloved master teacher of wheel-throwing, passed away in 2021 at the age of 72.

Pottery with spirit for Shin Mei Centre

September 2022

I was honoured to make the special ‘sakezuki’ vessels for drinking ceremonial sake at the September 2022 installation of Kinomiri jinja, a tranquil forest prayer shrine at the Shin Mei Spiritual Centre on Knapp Island. I appreciate that the Centre shares the teachings and practices of both Japanese Shinto and Tibetan Buddhism, at the same time welcoming persons of any faith to meditate, pray and study.

Spending tranquil time on tiny, 30-acre Knapp Island, just a short water taxi ride from where I live, is natural inspiration for pottery. We’ve launched a new collaboration in which a special collection of my signature cups will be available for purchase by visitors to the Centre. I dream of taking clay to the forest and creating pinching pots while sitting amongst the trees and gentle rhythm of waves.

Artisan activism for Ukraine

In February 2022, I joined other makers worldwide in standing up for Ukraine during the Russian invasion.

I’d call it artisan activism instinct for human rights. In spontaneity, I joined other makers worldwide in standing up for Ukraine soon after the Russian invasion. A simple offering of clutchback heart pins in blue-yellow glaze over textured stoneware ($10 apiece) has raised well over $1000 in donations to organizations that support refugees and displaced persons.

meet me at the marigold? pop-up show & fundraiser

In December 2021, terrice hosted a pop-up show and sale on the outdoor patio of the buzzy Marigold Cafe, located along the Lochside Trail bike path in Saanichton. This Covid-safe event was made possible by the cafe’s co-founders, Red Seal chef Ryan Hayter and his wife Jenny. Despite single digit temperatures, there was a steady flow of pottery-loving shoppers and coffee drinkers. By design, 20% of pottery sale proceeds was donated to the Canadian Red Cross for BC’s Extreme Weather Response relief and recovery efforts. With a dollar for dollar match from both the provincial government and the federal government of Canada, the donation totalled more than C$1400. Back to brand basics–using pottery power as a force for good.

Pottery with Purpose donation creates Islaview Foundation workshop

DEER LAKE, N.L. — Juanita Mercer

Terrice Bassler believes a new pottery workshop at the Islaview Foundation in Deer Lake is a synchronicity that can only be explained as the work of a child who died three years ago, and another who died nearly two decades ago.

Bassler’s friend, Sarah Short, formed the foundation two years ago with her husband, Mike Short, in memory of their daughter, Isla.

Isla died of cancer in 2017 when she was three and a half years old. Her parents wanted to help other families who had children with life-threatening illnesses in the same way the Deer Lake community rallied around them.

The foundation’s signature heart pins were created by Bassler, and over the years the foundation and the potter partnered on many fundraising initiatives. Bassler has created everything from earrings to mugs and bowls — usually with the foundation’s signature hearts or rainbow motifs.

“The work of pottery in Isla’s name grew right alongside the formation of the foundation,” explained Bassler.
