my story

I am drawn to simple, smiling vessels that can be held in the hand and used at home. I look for ways to make a positive difference through what I create. I find meaning in using pottery power for community good—and in the infinite lessons of clayplay for keeping us well, curious, honest and wise.

My work is inspired by the kitchens, gardens, and women’s craft of years growing up in the Helderberg hilltowns of rural upstate New York. Discovering the magical story depicted on my great grandmother’s cobalt blue willow tableware is a vivid girlhood memory.

I come from a long line of makers. Extra spice for creativity came later through a travelling career of several decades with schooling development efforts in Africa, the Balkans, and Asia. I learned from being welcomed into faraway homes and visiting ceramic collections in museums around the world.

Beginning in 2008, I dived my hands into clay, fell in love and thereafter set up a studio in St. John’s, Newfoundland that evolved into the enterprise known as pottery with purpose. Life became a joyful time of learning and muddy workdays as a local village potter with a global outlook. In 2011-2012, I studied in residence at El Torn in Barcelona. I took a sabbatical in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I helped guide ceramic artists and collectors on learning journeys to South Africa in collaboration with Cape Insights. I introduced pottery to the Islaview Foundation for innovative fundraising during their start-up years. There was opportunity with galleries for exhibitions and collaborative design with artisans who worked in textiles, wood and other media.

In 2020, our family moved to Cordova Bay in British Columbia—with my faithful pottery wheel in tow. Nowadays, I balance days in the outdoor inspiration of Vancouver Island with a dynamic portfolio of creative projects, grateful to be engaged with newfound pottery-lovers, partners and possibility in Canada and the wider world.
